Walking Charleston is truly the best way to see all the hidden treasures of the Charleston has to offer. The carriage rides do offer a guided tour with licensed tour guides who will give you valuable information about the city. They all offer various packages and some offer package deals that are combined with other tours.
Be aware that if you’re visiting in the summertime, the horses are pulled off the tours if the temperatures get too high. Book an early morning tour or an evening tour if the temperatures are high!
There has been some controversy over the carriage rides. Animal rights activists oppose the practice and deem them to be cruel to the animals. The carriage companies take excellent care of their animals and they are monitored after each tour. I think they get better health care than I do.
It is very charming to sit and listen to the history of the city in a horse drawn carriage. Takes me back in time!
